A booster compressor receives gas under pressure and is therefore more efficient and pumps more gas per horsepower than a standard compressor.
When producing nitrogen with a membrane or PSA system the nitrogen often comes off at about 100 psi (7 bar). By putting a regulator in-line a booster can be used without the need of first stage compression.
